ALISON JONES 3*

MOULTON COLLEGE
Northampton
6th & 7th April

Level 1 / 2 Course

I arrive at Moulton College to see all is quiet in the car park, no one has arrived yet. Once parked up I go around the arena just in time to see Alison pull up in her car. It's a lovely day, nice and warm, with a gentle breeze with the aroma of horses. Bliss! Soon enough the sound of tyres gets my attention and I see everyone starting to arrive. There's Evelyn with her horse Jayne, Catherine with Capella, Hoppy with Bruno, Mike with Murphy and Brenda with Maddie. After signing the relevant forms the day is started with a good discussion with Alison. Various topics were discussed but two that struck with me was "What does Love, Language and Leadership in equal doses equal?" Erm! We offer a few answers but though good its not the one Alison is looking for. Alison finally gives us a big clue and at last we get it right. The answer is Lightness. Then each word was discussed. Language - Hard to understand but easy to learn Love - Self explanatory Leadership - When you think you need the friendly game you may actually need phase 4 and vice versa. The qualities of leadership were discussed, and what came up were, Calmness, Confidence, Knowledge, Time, Availability, Understanding, Respect and Consistency. What makes a good leader? A boss who doesn't tell you what you are doing wrong but gives good criticism.

10.45am Talk over and all the horses are brought into the arena. This was my chance to grab my camera which I first used to take some photos of Alison's dog "Doogle". Doogle just loves clapping and doesn't take much prompting to show off to us all. The usual start to the day was warming up and going through the games. I had the pleasure of having Doogle and Dawn Amour kindly helped AJ bring out the props.

11.15am
Alison got everyone to play the games using the lightest feel and doing your highest. Confused. this meant using a very light feel and using the lightest of phases and seeing what you could receive from your horse. This could be anything from increasing the distance or upping the tasks such as going from simple "Circling to playing "Change of Direction" During this time Mick was having a couple of difficulties with sending Murphy over a jump so AJ coached him through this. AJ increased the level by having people backing their horse up using more energy and with better use of the CS. Being effective instead of nagging. The look on the horses faces was fascinating as the horses realised there was going to be no messing today.

12.30pm
AJ then give a demo of "Transitions on the Circle" Where to place the CS, use of the 12ft and 22ft line. When playing the circling game, the horse should do 2-4 laps on the 12ft line and 6-8 on the 22ft line. This is unbroken laps. If the horse stops then you start counting from 1 again." What do you do if the horse just disengages all the time?" RE-SEND.. Alison points out that the laps also need to be calm and relaxed. After the demo and all questions are asked and answered everyone goes off to practice. Lunch seems a long way off and it was a welcome sight when it came. Hungry faces soon got together and what did we do. Chat about horses of course.

2.30pm
When is the time right to move from the 12ft line to the 22ft line? Now this is a good question, various answers came forward which Alison said were good but not what she was looking for. You could near on see the commotion in every ones head as they tried to think but no one got it. What was it... The answer will be revealed on the .... nah only kidding. "When the 12ft line feels too short". simple eh! So the afternoon was spent playing circling and disengaging and playing friendly from different zones, Squeeze over a pole and getting a good send. Whey Hey! Not so easy when you ask rather than tell.. Over a small jump of only 1ft Bruno (all 17.2hh of him) was having none of it. What a baby, Hoppy being a big softie makes excuses for him saying he has arthritis but hang a mo, isn't that Hoppy a few minutes later sending Bruno over a 2ft jump with him flying over quite enthusiastically? Catherine shows her shy side and tries to hide and discretely send Capella effortlessly over a pole though the disengaging needs working on. Murphy, well what a lot of horse Murphy is with attitude. If he doesn't want to do anything he just takes off. Murphy was saying "No! I don't do jumps, no matter how low they are" Alison takes the line and Murphy gives as good as he gets but Alison being a good leader soon shows how to send a RB horse LB and by doing plenty of approach and retreat with friendly she soon has Murphy jumping both ways. This is not to say Murphy was putty in her hands because he wasn't. He braced, pulled and tried to turn many times but Alison stayed with him all the time. We were running over time and I unfortunately had to leave. Oh well! Now to re-cap on the Sunday.

SATURDAY
I missed the first couple of hours of the morning but I hear that Alison had three playing the carousel. Now that would have been great to watch ,, darn that I missed it. I arrive at the venue at 11.30am in time to see a game being set up. "Quick Draw" The idea is to place your CS on the ground with the handle at the cone. You hold the end of your SS and on a count of three you flick the CS into the air and catch it by the handle. You then swing the CS to hit the cone in the middle. After a bit practice Alison then set it into a fun competition. Set in pairs it was the best of five attempts and the one with the highest score won. The winners played each other until it was Evelyn and Hoppy in the final. It was a close call and Hoppy won only then to find that she now had to play Alison.

"Gulp" you hear the thoughts of Hoppy as she gathers herself ready for the game. Alison scores the first hit, then Hoppy. Then it's Alison again and wow! Hoppy evens the score. It's now 2 all and the deciding game is on. The CS are laid on the ground.. The opponents weigh each other up. the count down begins 3..2..1.. Quick draw. Alison and Hoppy flick their CS into the air in unison but Hoppy just gets the upper hand and whacks the cone to win. Whey Hey! Way to go Hoppy.

In the afternoon the horses are saddled up and Alison insists it is done correctly and from the off side. The horses are then taken through, lateral flexion, circling and sent over a jump before being mounted. Once on board the riders then practice indirect and direct rein. I look over and see Murphy being quite dominant, each time Mick goes to mount Murphy swings his head towards him and threatens to bite. Mick is patient and spends the time Murphy needs and it pays off as Mick comfortably mounts.
Lots to do, starting with riding through cones with one rein, and having to throw the line over the horses head when needing to change direction. Not so easy when your horse is over 16hh or like Bruno standing over 17hh. A long neck means you need a good throw or your line lands clumsily over your horses nose only to stay there.
One rein back up was practiced and then it was time to play "Ride the rail". I notice Catherine trying to dodge this one as she keeps stopping and doing pretty much nothing. Alison soon notices and gets Catherine on the move again. It was great to see Evelyn doing very well with Jayne. Brenda looks to be doing pretty good with Maddie and Mick is having a great time with Murphy who now seems to be enjoying himself.

Next up was CS riding though the cones. I see that Brenda is riding the cones well but isn't allowing Maddie any comfort and keeps the CS in the driving zone. I wonder if Alison notices. She does and gives Brenda the 2 second rule. Use the CS for 2 seconds then place back on your shoulder. Not so easy now as Maddie wanders off course. This exercise was first rode in walk and then repeated in trot.

Alison had asked me the previous evening to print off some assessment sheets. No one knows they are being assessed so they are surprised when they get their sheets. No one has passed as not all the tasks were completed and some tasks for some people needed more work. At least now they are on there way to passing Level 1 and given more incentives.

Time again is getting on and I need to get off to see to my horses. I let Alison know I need to go and say my farewells to everyone. I clamber into my car exhausted at being on my feet all day. The sun is still blazing as I set off for the yard. Another day over and two more to go.

A few photo's to finish off. Catherine, Alison with Murphy, Dawn Amour and Moira Dixon spectating.
